DNR Requests Comments on Requirements for Entering MFL

Although there have been no new law changes, this document is a compilation of DNR procedures on what’s needed for an acceptable plan. WAFO will be reviewing this document, but please feel free to offer any comments you might have directly to the DNR.  The deadline for submitting comments is November 3.

What’s Happening in the Legislature?

We could say “Not Much.” Things have been relatively quiet in the legislature with no specific discussions about making changes that would affect private woodland owners. However, the Farm Bureau is currently exploring ideas on possible changes to the MFL.  They are asking their members: 1) Do you think the current MFL requirements, which allow up to 20% non-productive acres to be included in the MFL, should be changed to reduce that maximum percentage to something less? and 2) Should the DNR do more to enforce the current MFL requirements?

They are questioning use-value and if it should be expanded to include more than just ag land. The thought there might be to include farm buildings as well. They also are asking their members if the legislature should invest more in the shared revenue formula to compensate rural local governments for the loss of property tax revenue resulting from use value taxation.
